Your surgeon will speak with your escort after the procedure. They will be given detailed post-operative instructions based on your specific procedure and condition. You will be given a phone number to call if you have any concerns after returning home. It will be important to take time to rest and heal.

After careful monitoring in the recovery area, the attending nurse will determine when the anesthesia begins to wear off and you become awake and alert. At that time, your family member or escort will be invited to join you in the recovery area. Special arrangements are made for minor children having surgery.

You will not be allowed to drive following a procedure. Your friend, family member, or caregiver must transport you home. The use of a taxi or other public transportation is not permitted.

Most patients will continue their usual medications after surgery. Any adjustments to those medications will be given in written instructions along with instructions for any pain medication prescribed. These will be reviewed with the patient's escort.

Depending upon your specific procedure, there may be pain associated with your immediate recovery ... 1-3 days after surgery. If your pain becomes extreme or if you exhibit warning symptoms described in your discharge instructions, contact your physician, go to the nearest emergency room, or call 911.

Most patients can resume their normal eating habits. We encourage you to eat lightly after surgery while drinking plenty of fluids. If your physician has provided specific dietary instructions, please follow those closely. Avoid all alcoholic beverages while recovering and taking pain medications.
